About the Authentic Tibetan Rug Company

Our Story

Having visited one of the oldest working rug weaving workshops in Lhasa, Kathy and Guy have begun bringing rugs out of Tibet to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area for exhibition and sale.

The Potala Rug Company Ltd. workshop in Lhasa houses 10 looms. It is staffed by Tibetans from the town of Nagartze, about a day's trip from Lhasa. The people of Nagartze have been rug weavers for generations. Tashi-La, the 60 year old owner of the factory, has sold her rugs in Germany, Korea, New York and now Minneapolis.

When Tibet was first opened to foreign travelers, Tashi-la arranged with tour guides to have tourists brought to her workshop and showroom in the western edge of Lhasa.

Since July of 2000, Potala Carpet Comany Ltd. rugs have been exclusively available in the midwest through Authentic Tibetan Rug Company of Minneapolis.

Beginning in a small store front in south Minneapolis, the Authentic Tibetan Rug Company built up a clientelle and in March of 2003 moved to their present showroom location.

In addition to Kathy and Guy selling rugs, Cy Winship and Henry Schultz also show rugs.
