The Mission of the Authentic Tibetan Rug Company©
Our goal is to celebrate and revere the rarefied world of the wool gatherers and weavers of the Tibetan Plateau.
Striving always to share with our clients the artistry of the talented Tibetan craftsmen. They faithfully follow their ancestors’ methods of wool gathering, dyeing and weaving of these exceptional hand made rugs.
We are proud to be the sole distributor in North American of the world’s finest Himalayan
wool rugs made entirely within Tibet. The artist weavers have reach their majority and none of our
rugs are woven by children. It is not in the culture of native Tibetans to ever use Children in
that fashion.
Gathering of the wool from the Himalayan nomads begins the process of making Tibetan rugs. The raw wool is then washed, carded, spun, dyed and woven within the shadow of the exiled Dali Lami’s Potala Palace in a small facility on the outskirts of Lhasa, Tibet.
The workforce of 25-30 adult Tibetans from the village of Nagarze weaves the rugs into various traditional designs. The weavers have now embarked upon the execution of contemporay designs and patterns created by our designers here in the United States.
Economic development is a major community issue in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet Rug weaving helps the local ecnomy and secures the continuing of the cultural heritage of rug making in Tibet. Kathy McKay and Guy Banks began importing rugs from Tibet in 1999.
