About the Rugs
the Wool
Changphl, wool from sheep living at 14,000 feet or higher, is unlike any other in the world. Lanolin rich, with complex fibers, the wool takes dyes in a variagated manner. This warm wool from the high Himalayas repels dirt and the effects of wear beyond all other wools.

Austere, cold, and bright with sunlight, the Tibetan plateau is the home of these thick-coated sheep. Also found there are yaks, cashmere goats, and the Chiru, an endangered Tibetan antelope.
For generations, Tibetans have woven and hand knotted wool and down from their native animals into colorful blankets and rugs. They make rugs for bedding, for seating and for saddle blankets used on yaks and donkeys.
The Tibetans use colors--some intense, some muted--to express their many designs. Some of the most popular are:
- lotus blossoms,
- auspicisous symbols,
- tigers and black necked cranes,
- aprons designs,
- and various flowers.
You can see all of the designs that we sell in the Gallery of Rugs.
the Designs
All of our rug designs originated in Tibet. Some designs date back 100 years or more while others were developed more recently. The rugs are constructed with between 80 and 90 knots per square inch with heavy Himalayan wool. Before processing, the wool is washed gently. That way, it retains some of its lanolin and repels dirt and grease.
